Whitmore Lakes (Swan Lake) Wild Swimming
Whitmore Lakes is an un-lifeguarded estate of lakes off Three Mile Lane, Whitmore ST5 5HN — what3words lively.shins.pools. Year-round, 09:00–19:00 every day. A day pass, not a 60-minute slot. You book online, complete the waiver, check in at reception, then swim. You go because Staffordshire has a bookable wild-swim estate you can stay in all afternoon, with a Cake Shack and wood-fired saunas. You also go knowing nobody is lifeguarding the water. If you want a NOWCA wristband and a rescue boat, this is the wrong pin.
Getting in
Book before you arrive. No walk-up pay-on-the-day. Off-peak day pass £10: term-time weekdays 09:00–19:00. Peak £12.50: weekends, bank holidays and school holidays. Monthly membership £45; annual £495. Members should still book; at busy times they can check in and use the other lakes.
Waiver in advance. Under-18s need an adult 18+ to complete it. Supervision no greater than 3:1. Minimum age 11 to swim, and that adult is in the water. Able to swim 50m unaided. Children who are not on a booked, age-appropriate activity are not allowed to spectate around the lakes.
Tow floats are compulsory for solo swimmers and in winter; strongly recommended otherwise. Designated entry and exit only. No diving or jumping. New to open water: book an Introduction with Ian at Kuotos Swim, not a first-day plunge.
Free parking; stewards may send you to overspill, about a ten-minute walk to reception. Bike racks. Small changing areas, no showers, no lockers. Leave kit on pegs at your own risk.
The swim
Several lakes, not one hole. Osprey is the dedicated swim lake, anti-clockwise around a central island. Swan Lake has the lakeside sauna. Heron is sold as quieter. Cygnet is the newer social leisure lake. Dragonfly is members-only, private hire and Kuotos courses. Otter is family-friendly in the summer holidays. Kingfisher is paddleboard — separate pass. Teal is listed as coming soon. A swim pass is not a paddleboard pass.
Un-lifeguarded. Own risk. Water quality is tested; they publish microbiology, blue-green algae and chemistry results. Daily temperature is on the board at reception and on their socials.
Sauna is an add-on after you book a swim. 55-minute session including the deck. 16+; 16–17s with an 18+ adult. Not for pregnancy. They want you out of the heat after 15 minutes at a time. Lakeside sauna on Swan, or a PortaSauna by Heron Lake.
The Cake Shack is independent. You can eat there without a swim booking. Breakfasts, lunches, cakes. Dogs on a short lead at the shack only; not around the lakes unless they agree it.
Worth knowing
It is a peaceful-site rule-set, not a municipal lido. No alcohol. No inflatables. No motorised craft. No nudity. Security and online booking came in after a busy heatwave weekend; they mean the capacity cap.
If you want a Staffordshire NOWCA session with a lifeguard instead, Pillaton Hall Farm at Penkridge is the other West Midlands listing. Whitmore is the all-day estate pass.
