Beckenham Place Park Lake Wild Swimming
Beckenham Place Park has London’s first purpose-built swimming lake: 285 metres long, up to 3.5 metres deep, in a Lewisham council park. PTP Coaching run it. Pre-booked swimming and paddleboard sessions, not a free dip in a park pond. Age 8+. You go because it is a proper swim lake in South East London you can reach without a reservoir membership, and because winter swimming here is a real product if you have done their cold-water induction. You do not go for changing rooms. There aren’t any. Café and toilets are in the park, not a lakeside leisure centre. Book the hour, get in, get dressed in a robe.
Getting in
Book through PTP Coaching, not the park desk. Their bookings page lists open-water swims from £4.50. A cold-water induction — bank session plus a swim — is £17.40, in person or online. That induction is mandatory when the water is at or below 14–15°C. PTP’s own copy uses both numbers; do not split hairs, just do the course. Previous PTP winter inductions can still count if they still have you on the database — email info@ptpcoaching.co.uk before you assume. Other companies’ inductions do not transfer. Christmas / New Year event briefs are not a full induction.
Age 8+. Under-16s need a participating adult in the water. Under-16s must wear a wetsuit when it is under 15°C; for everyone else a wetsuit is optional and strongly recommended at 14°C and below. Tow float comes with the induction swim. Lewisham residents may be asked for proof of address. Lewisham Local cardholders who volunteer in the borough can get free swimming — that is the park operator’s line, not a walk-up rumour.
Hours move with the season. In warmer months they have run early starts around 06:15 on weekdays and later weekend finishes; winter is shorter and induction-gated. Check the day’s PTP slots, not last year’s May blog. The lake temperature is posted on PTP’s channels (5.8°C on 24 January 2026). Turn up without a winter induction in the cold and they will refuse you, no refund.
The swim
A purpose-built lake, not a flooded gravel pit. 285m long, 3.5m at the deep end, so a loop is in the order of 500m if you swim the perimeter. Staffed. Paddleboards and canoes use the same water on booked sessions. SUP yoga exists in the warm months. It is still a swim lake first.
No showers, no proper changing. Dress for a park. The park café and toilets are the facilities. Parking is in the park and can mean a walk to the water.
Year-round as a product, with the winter rule sitting on top. If you have never been in water under 15°C, the induction is the point of the first visit, not a hoop. Give yourself about two hours that day: 45 minutes on the bank, then the swim.
Worth knowing
This is not Hampstead and not West Reservoir. No City of London ticket, no Better app, no 300m reservoir loop. It is a council park lake run by a coaching company, cheaper, shallower, and fussy about winter paperwork.
It is not a paddling beach for under-8s. It is not a drop-in. Summer sessions fill. If you want Zone 2 reservoir loops, West Reservoir at Manor House is the other London listing. If you want a legendary pond, that is the Heath. Beckenham is the purpose-built one in Lewisham, with an induction you cannot skip when it is cold.
