Divers Cove Wild Swimming

Divers Cove is a 7.3-acre former sand-extraction reservoir at Godstone, with a sandy bottom and turquoise water that photographs well. Two marked circuits, 450m and 650m. Open-water lifeguards. Heated changing rooms, lockers, a café, wood-fired barrel saunas. Summer water can reach about 25°C, which is warm for this country. You go because it is close to London, you can book a slot, and it is actually a wild-water lake rather than a municipal pool. You also go because they will not let you in unless you can swim 450m without stopping. It is a Surrey lagoon with rules, not a beach.

Getting in

Pre-book every swim. There is no casual gate. Pay-as-you-go is 60 minutes at £11.99. Bronze, Silver and Gold annual memberships knock the entry down if you will be here often. Summer: book online. Winter, November to April: members only, Saturday and Sunday 09:00–10:00, pay on site. If you are not a member, do not plan a January dip here.

Bright hat is mandatory. Tow float is required if you are not in a wetsuit, or if you are under 16. Wetsuit advised below 16°C; you can hire one on site. Competent children 7+ can swim with an adult in the water, if they can do the distance. That distance is the 450m. If they cannot, they are not swimming.

No dogs. No paddling. No picnics or BBQs. Access is from North Park Lane only. The HGV road has no public access. Put the right entrance in the satnav or you will sit on a lorry route wondering where the lake went.

The swim

You need to be able to swim the shorter one without stopping. Lifeguards on the water. Heated changing rooms and lockers, which matters after an hour. Café. Wood-fired barrel saunas if that is your after.

Summer can hit about 25°C. That is warm for UK open water, not the rule. Below 16°C they want you in a wetsuit. Winter is a one-hour members’ slot at 9am on the weekend. Different sport, same lake.

Bring the bright hat, the float if you are skins, goggles, and a padlock if you care about the locker. Hire the wetsuit if you have not got one and the water is under 16°C. You have 60 minutes. That is the slot, not a lake day.

Worth knowing

Winter swimming is members only. The page is honest about that. Thunder closes the lake. You must be able to swim 450m without stopping — that is the competence bar, and it applies to the 7-year-olds too, with an adult in the water.

It is not a paddling venue and not a picnic site. If you want kids splashing in the shallows with a barbecue, this will refuse you at the rule list. No dogs, including the ones who “just sit on the bank”.

Get the access right: North Park Lane only. Memberships renew themselves after a year. Check the calendar before you assume a summer Saturday is still on sale.
