Hampstead Heath Mixed Pond Wild Swimming

The Mixed Pond is the seasonal one of three natural bathing ponds on Hampstead Heath. Lifeguarded, ticketed, cold, murky. You go because it is the urban wild swim people mean when they say Hampstead. It is not turquoise. It is not warm, even in July. Cold-water shock is real here in summer. You still go, because a proper pond in London with a ticket and a lifeguard is rare, and the Heath does the rest of the day. Mixed Pond only. Highgate Men’s Pond is year-round and a different listing. Kenwood Ladies’ Pond is a separate venue and is temporarily closed on the official page — do not plan a Saturday around it.

Getting in

Open April to October. Exact dates sit on the Mixed Pond page, so check them before you assume April means the first. Adult pond ticket £5, concession and under-16 £3. Those prices are valid to 31 March 2027. Season tickets exist if you will be here a lot.

Summer, late May to early September, is a mix. Some sessions are bookable online. They release daily at 8pm, up to 7 days ahead. Morning drop-in is pay-on-arrival. Outside that summer window, it is all drop-in. In a heatwave the bookable slots sell out. Set a reminder for 8pm or go early for drop-in. Do not turn up late on a heatwave Saturday and expect to walk in.

Cashless from 1 October 2026. Until then, assume you still need to check how they are taking money that week. Parliament Hill Lido is on the same Heath estate — 60m, unheated, a lido. It is not this listing. Do not mix the two up when you book.

Bring a towel, something warm for after, and a hat if you have one. The ponds do not run like a leisure centre. No tow-float or wetsuit rule is posted. You will still want layers. The water is cold.

The swim

A natural bathing pond. Lifeguarded while it is open to the public. The water is pond water: murky, colder than it looks. No marked triangle, no published depth. You swim in the pond, inside the rules of the day, with a lifeguard on duty. That is the whole offer.

Facilities are Heath facilities, not a purpose-built outdoor centre. You are here for the water and the Heath, not for heated changing rooms and a café built around the swim. If you want that version of London open water, West Reservoir is the other listing.

It is mixed. It is busy when the weather is good. It is quiet and sharper in April and October. I would rather a cold Tuesday in May than a sold-out Sunday in a heatwave, but both are the same pond.

Worth knowing

Seasonal. Closed to public swimming outside April–October. Do not treat it as a winter spot. That is Highgate Men’s, which is not this page.

Ponds close at short notice for water quality, lightning, or maintenance. Check the City of London page the morning you go. Ladies’ Pond is currently closed — do not send anyone there. Cold-water shock still happens in August. If you have never got in outdoor water, read the usual open-water advice first and get in slowly.

Bookable summer sessions sell out. Drop-in mornings are the backup, and they queue. This is not a hidden pond. It is the most famous urban wild swim in the country, and it behaves like one.
