Higham Lakes Wild Swimming

Higham Lakes is a private lake two miles north of Ponteland, just off the A696, postcode NE20 0DH. H2O Trails run the only swim: members, booked online, lifeguarded sessions. They left Sweethope in March 2025 and have been here since. Sister outfit Northumbrian Sauna sits on the same shore. You go because Newcastle actually has a ticketed lake with a £7 session and a £20 year, and because they put lifeguards on it and test the water. You also go knowing there is no casual gate. Their venues page is blunt: private land, online booking only. Do not just turn up.

Getting in

Membership is £20 a year. Regular lifeguarded dip sessions are £7. The info page also lists £4 for one week and £8 for three weeks. Adults 18+ need their own profile. Regular dips are for people who already have outdoor experience; if you have none, they want you in a lesson first, then the community sessions. All swims book online. The calendar only opens once you are a member.

Homepage timetable as of 25 August 2026: Monday 18:30; Tuesday 10:00, 18:30 and 19:30; Wednesday 12:00; Thursday 18:30 and 19:30; Friday 11:00; Saturday 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00; Sunday 17:00. One-hour sessions. The info page still carries an older spring list with Thursdays “to be announced” and Saturday at noon. Use the homepage.

Winter dippers run October to March. General season is April or May through October. Temperature gates who gets in: under about 10°C is winter dippers; 10–15°C is general-season adults 16+; from 14°C they take 11+ again, and experienced 8–11s with an adult if they have been coached here. Under-16s need an adult present. Age 10+ can swim on their own subject to an ability check and a kit check.

The swim

A private lake, not a beach and not a published training circuit. Official pages do not list loop distances. Do not assume a 750m triangle. Lifeguards on the booked sessions. No access to the lake outside H2O Trails. Dogs stay at home. They have spent the first year putting in parking, paths down to the water, and toilets. That work is the point of moving: they now manage the land as well as the swim.

Sauna is Northumbrian Sauna, Fenwick Ridley, tents and a trailer. It is a separate ticket on the same shore, not the swim. Paddle is separate too: £16 entry, board hire £16 for two hours, book by text on 07737300470 when safety staff are already at the lake. Membership is for swimming, not SUP.

Worth knowing

This is not Sweethope. The About page still names Sweethope Lough. The home, info and venues pages name Higham. Swim England Poolfinder still points at the old lough. Ignore it. The fishery website still waving H2O Trails is stale.

Outdoor Swim Fest ran here on 27 June 2026. They talk about growing the weekly grid; the homepage already shows more slots than the spring info page. Check the live timetable before you drive from Newcastle. Fail to book and you are not swimming, even if you can see the water from the A696.
