Venachar Lochside Wild Swimming

Venachar Lochside sits on the south shore of Loch Venachar, a few miles west of Callander on the A821, FK17 8HP. You are not buying a swim ticket. You are booking a wild spa hour that includes loch access: Finnish sauna with a picture window (80–100°C), a red-cedar plunge held at about 3°C, a cold shower, a changing area in the old boathouse, then the loch off their shore. You go because the Trossachs actually has a paid, managed way into a real loch, and because almost everything else in the park is an unofficial dip. Summer loch temperature is still only about 13–17°C. Winter 3–7°C. It is not a country-park beach.

Getting in

Book online from the wild spa page. Mixed group: £15 a head, one hour, up to eight people, loch included. Private: from £100, up to ten people, up to three hours. Full-day hire from £525, ten in the sauna at once, up to 50 on site. Monthly membership £50, unlimited mixed-group sessions, priority booking, cancel anytime. A separate sauna FAQ quotes private at £105 an hour — treat £100+ as the range and check the booking screen.

Arrive at least 10 minutes early. Check in at the main building. They say you can come earlier for a swim or go straight to the session. Parking is on site. Tel 01877 381442.

Hours are not one number. The contact page lists wild spa daily 09:00–21:00. The sauna page also says open daily 8am–9pm, and that they start taking bookings at 8am with last bookings at 8pm. Wedding days close the whole place to the public. Call or look at the booking diary before you drive from Stirling. Restaurant is Thursday–Sunday only, and also shut on wedding days.

The swim

Loch Venachar itself, off their pontoon / shore, during the session you have paid for. The rest of the loch is not a lifeguarded swim zone. There is no marked 750m triangle. You dip or you swim as far as you are competent, then you get back to the heat. Plunge tub at ~3°C if the loch feels like too much, or not enough.

Changing area is warm and close to the water. Restaurant is seasonal lochside food, not a swim-club café — lunch and dinner Thu–Sun when they are not hosting a wedding. Dogs are welcome in the restaurant; that is not the same as a dog policy for the sauna. If you need a dog rule, ask them. Do not invent one.

Worth knowing

This is a sauna business with a loch attached, not an open-water centre with a sauna add-on. No published competence test, no mandatory tow float on the spa pages, no RLSS team on the water. If you want a supervised loop, this is the wrong pin. If you want heat, a 3°C tub, and a genuine Trossachs loch in the same hour, it is the one.

Membership is mixed-group only. Private and full-day are hire, not a season ticket. Sessions run year-round. Bring kit for getting in and out of cold water between sauna rounds, and do not treat the rest of Loch Venachar as theirs.
