West Reservoir Centre Wild Swimming

Reservoir

West Reservoir is a natural urban reservoir at Woodberry Down, Manor House, inside Zone 2. Supervised open-water loops, a qualified safety team, a café. Changing rooms and lockers are back after refurb works — bring a padlock. You go because you want proper reservoir swimming in London, not a lido, and because you can book a one-hour slot on the Better app and actually get in. Course is a 100m warm-up up to a 300m loop, and it shrinks when the water is cold. Year-round. It behaves like a leisure-centre open-water product: waiver, hat colour, tow float, on time or not at all.

Getting in

Year-round. Book a 1-hour slot on the Better UK app. Arrive on time. More than 10 minutes late and they may refuse you. One booking per day. PAYG and membership both run through Better / GLL.

Tow float is mandatory. The site can provide one if you have not got your own, but do not make that a surprise at the water. Bright red, orange or pink hat required. Wetsuit strongly recommended below 14°C, not compulsory. Minimum age 14. Ages 14–17 must be accompanied by an adult from the same household and wear a green hat. First visit: online waiver plus an on-the-day safety talk. There is no full induction currently.

Bring the float, the right colour hat, a padlock for the locker, and the app booking on your phone. If you are 14–17, the green hat and the adult from your household are not optional. If it is under 14°C and you have never done cold water, take the wetsuit recommendation seriously.

The swim

A natural reservoir with a safety team on it. You swim marked loops: 100m warm-up up to 300m. That is not a 750m triangle. Course length and in-water time get cut as the temperature drops. In winter you are doing a shorter loop in a shorter window. Still year-round, still booked.

Café on site. Changing rooms and lockers are back after the refurb. Bring a padlock. The centre has been under major improvement works; it stays open, but parking and some indoor facilities are reduced. Do not assume a big car park or a full indoor offering.

Water is reservoir water in Hackney: urban, supervised, cold more often than not. For confident swimmers. Newcomers should read Swim England open-water advice first. The safety talk on day one is the induction you get. Listen to it.

Worth knowing

Sessions cancelled for lightning, snow, or serious fog. Course shrinks in the cold. Late by more than 10 minutes and you can lose the slot. One booking per day, so you cannot stack hours.

The refurb is real: centre open, parking and indoor kit reduced. Factor that in if you are driving. Lockers need your padlock.

Minimum age 14. This is not a family splash. 14–17s need an adult from the same household and a green hat. It is aimed at people who can already handle open water, or who have at least read the Swim England advice and treated the first visit as a briefing, not a jolly.

Hampstead Heath Mixed Pond is the other London listing: seasonal, a natural bathing pond, £5, and a very different booking pattern. West Reservoir is the year-round Zone 2 loop with a float and a coloured hat. Use both. They are not substitutes.
